Friends of Steele Creek Inc (FOSC Inc) is committed to the restoration and stewardship of Steele Creek, focusing on restoring its water quality, nurturing its landscape, and protecting its diverse flora and fauna. We collaborate with Maribyrnong catchment groups to lobby for greater protection of our waterways.
About Us
FOSC Inc is an independent, not for profit, community organisation. We were established in 1995 out of frustration with our government agencies who were not living up to their responsibility to care for our creek and parklands. FOSC provides a practical way for residents and Friends to be involved in protecting and restoring Steele Creek and its tributaries. Over the years, our work has been supported by grants from DEECA, Melbourne Water and local councils (see Groups We Work With)
We love planting, but it’s our relentless advocacy to all levels of government and government agencies that sets us apart (see Our Submissions). In particular, we advocate for greater government investment in stormwater capture treatment and reuse. For a healthier waterway, it is essential to reduce the adverse impacts of increasing volumes of this stormwater entering our creeks due to more hard surfaces within the area.
Join Us
FOSC has a been a tireless champion for Steele Creek and its adjacent parklands (see Our History for our many successes). Join us to continue this work. Current activities include native vegetation restoration, planting weeds to get rid of weeds, webinars with expert speakers, festivals and advocacy. We encourage our members and locals to report pollution to the EPA and to follow up what action they took.
By supporting FOSC you will make a difference to the environment, strengthen your connections in the local community, improve your physical health and well-being and strengthen our voice to government. You will have the satisfaction of watching your plants grow and seeing more birds and beneficial bugs in your local area. Committee meetings are open to all and give the opportunity to plan the future direction of our group.
